Fr. Paul and I spent last week away on retreat where we were renewed spiritually. Thank you for your prayers for us both during that time.
We are now in the season of Lent. Fredrick Nietzsche the Philosopher says, “Ten times a day you must overcome yourself.” In this season of Lent, we do that with the help of grace. We, Christians, are overcoming ourselves, not ten times a day but constantly. Our master Jesus Christ in his journey ultimately overcame death and opened up the gate of paradise for us.
This journey of overcoming ourselves is not easy. We have our struggles. We need some help as we start this journey. Where can we find our role models? To answer this question, I am offering a bible study on different stories of the Old Testament. Oftentimes, we skip those great stories. The Old Testament stories are the beginning of our salvation history. Jesus Christ came as the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Throughout this Lent, we as a group will read different Old Testament stories. We are going to learn from our patriarchs’ and matriarchs’ struggles. It was not easy for them to follow God, but made it possible.
The expectation for this group is to come to these sessions with your bible (Old Testament, physical or digital copy). ‘Take up and read’ is the simple invitation given to a young man who focused on worldly things. This young man did take up and read the scripture which eventually changed his whole life. That is how we got a great saint – St. Augustine. This course on the Old Testament invites you to do the same thing, take up and read not only during this Lent but also in your times of anxieties and stress, and moments of peace and joy. Be encouraged by the stories of our Salvation history.
This course is geared toward adults 21 or older and will be held two days a week: Thursday at 7 pm at St. Eulalia Parish and Saturday after 8 am Mass at St. Mary’s Parish.
I wish everyone to have a blessed time of prayer, penance, and fasting.
